Artist Biography

Tom Echlin is an artist from North Wales, currently pursuing an MA in Interdisciplinary Art Practice at Glyndwr University. His studies center around the intriguing concept of hauntology, which challenges the conventional perception of the past as a linear timeline. Instead, hauntology considers the past as a haunting force that disrupts and permeates the present, shaping our understanding of it. This perspective highlights how cultural artifacts and practices carry echoes of history within them.

Within his current artistic practice, Tom delves deep into the realm of hauntology, exploring the overlap between past and present to create a realm of haunted memories and spectral narratives. His paintings act as gateways, beckoning viewers to immerse themselves in a world where ghosts roam the landscapes that surround us. Employing diverse techniques and mediums, he brings forth ghostly apparitions onto the canvas, revealing what once was, what is, and what is yet to come.

Tom’s artistic exploration extends beyond the realm of visual art alone. He delves into the realm of soundscapes and disintegration loops, crafting accompanying auditory experiences that repeat and decay over time. These audio elements serve to enhance the atmospheric presence of his paintings, enveloping the viewer in an auditory landscape that resonates with the haunting narratives depicted on the canvas. The fusion of visual and auditory elements within Tom’s work creates a multisensory engagement, amplifying the emotional impact of his artistic expressions.
