Victoria Lucas’ film work, After, was presented alongside newly commissioned sculptural work, for the sixth installment of the PERICLO programme of exhibitions.
Lucas’ artworks are often initiated by a physical encounter with a place, site or landscape. Concentrating on these contexts and their current or former inhabitants, she develops conceptual narratives that subvert and categorise events and myths using a site’s materiality as a catalyst.
After is a documentary work that depicts the empty Castle Market in Sheffield shortly after it's doors had closed in 2013 and before its subsequent demolition in 2015. The film was created as part of a six week residency at the site, during which Lucas occupied an empty unit in the lower level of the market.
The new work exhibited alongside this film was made using found materials taken from Castle Market during the same aforementioned six-week residency.
